John and Mary P. Grew Chair in American Studies
The John and Mary P. Grew Chair in American Studies was established by Mrs. Grew. Mary P. "Sister" Grew was a long time resident of Aiken's Winter colony, and she chose to make a gift to the place the grew to call home. "She chose to make this gift out of her love for this community that she has lived in for more than 20 years," said Dr. Harry E. Shealy, former associate chancellor for development and alumni affairs at USCA. "American studies is a great interest of hers and her family itself is very much a part of American history." This chair was the thirteenth in the campaign to create 25 endowed chairs in the late 80s and early 90s.
